"We've had another amazing stay in your cottage, this being our 8th time. Everything spotless. Really appreciated the cottage facilities and location as always, never tiring of the changing views and tides. Saw otters from the kitchen window. (Booked again for 2024 which will be their ninth consecutive year)

K.C. (September 2023)

"It's beautiful here. Everywhere looks lovely. The sun is shining and we've already been swimming. We were in awe of the endless skies and spectacular sunsets. Great birdwatching in the garden."

Maggie Saxon and Lee Corner (August 2023)

"The cottage is as lovely as ever and has again worked its undoubted charm on us. As soon as we arrived, we agreed we would like to come again next year. It's such a special place and wraps itself around us in such a soothing yet invigorating way. (Booked again for 2024)

G.G. (July 2023)

"Balranald Bay View cottage is very comfortable and super clean. The views from the cottage are stunning and we were totally mesmerised by the changing tides, clouds and so many sea birds passing by. The wine was greatly enjoyed with the salmon and eggs (all in the welcome pack). We booked a tour with Martin Gillingham who is a really pleasant local wildlife guide and so knowledgable. We saw two golden eagles and he gave us an insight into local birdlife which was so useful during the rest of the week - later we kept saying "where's Martin?" when we wanted a bird identified. We had a wonderful holiday which we will always remember. I do hope we can return another year. I was so fortunate to find your website."

M. L. (June 2023)

"We had a wonderful holiday in your very lovely cottage. We were blown away with the views across the bay (from the cottage) with it changing all the time. Thank you so much for helping us to have a well needed break. We loved every second and missed it as soon as we left."

Nicola Draper and Kate Perks (June 2023)

"Another amazing relaxing two weeks - thank you. Enjoyed every minute. The wine in the welcome pack was really nice too! Saw a grey headed lapwing, very rare. This is our 7th trip to North Uist in the last 16 years and Balranald Bay View cottage is the nicest place we've stayed. We love it.

Lorraine and Martin Kiddle (May 2023)

"What a wonderful welcome! Cosy and beautiful. The accommodation was brilliant, spotlessly clean, homely, equipped with everything you could need with plenty of information to help you enjoy your stay. Thank you so much for your generosity with all the goodies you left for us (in the welcome pack). The Uist beaches are beautiful with probably the best one right outside the door! Saw loads of wildlife including both types of eagle, short eared owls, hen harriers and otters. Got some nice videos of the corncrake close to the cottage. Thank you for a lovely stay and for all your help and guidance. Balranald Bay View Cottage is a credit to you and a wonderful base for visitors to the island."

Marilyn and Graham Welham ( May 2023)

"We loved the location of the cottage - quite stunning. The cottage was very spacious, immaculately presented, well equipped and spotlessly clean. The welcome pack was generous and most welcome. Beds super comfortable! Our highlight of the week was the day we spent with Martin Gillingham (North Uist wildlife guide, whom we would highly recommend. Saw corncrake, hen harriers and short eared owls which were 'firsts' for us. We also loved hearing the snipes drumming and watching the wading birds along the shoreline. We ate at the Westford Inn and Langass Lodge - both meals good and tasty. However our favourite was the Namara cafe at Killin which we visited twice for the super fresh sea food.

Tim Wilson and Louise Jaggard (April 2023)

"The cottage is perfectly situated, very comfortable, warm, welcoming and homely. Went swimming in the bay beside the cottage in glorious weather. Found cockles on the beach which we ate with onion and garlic, accompanied by the lovely wine in the welcome pack. Enjoyed pony riding, cycling and the beautiful sunsets. Saw wildlife galore including sea eagles, hen harriers and a golden eagle which flew past the kitchen window. Thank you again for a holiday to remember forever."

Lynne and John Cox (April 2023)

"We loved staying in your cottage (for the 7th time). This year we had the treat of watching an otter mum feeding two young. It's hard to think of anywhere else we'd rather be."

K.C. (September 2022)

"Had an amazing two weeks and absolutely loved it. The cottage was immaculate and felt immediately like pulling on a familiar jumper. It really is a special place and we loved the feeling of slowly unwinding. My wife describes it as being like a long slow breath out. The sunsets are incredible. We saw otters whilst out walking and a basking shark 150m from the shore of Traigh Iar beach and watched it through binoculars for several minutes. Thank you so much for letting us stay in your amazing property to experience this wonderful place.

G.G. (September 2022)

"Another fabulous week, this was our sixth holiday staying at your cottage which was as comfortable and welcoming as ever. Great walking, amazing sunsets and swimming every day."

E.F. (August 2022)

This wonderful cottage has everything you could possibly want for an excellent stay. Well appointed with beautiful views across the bay and you can access the beach straight from the back door. The bird song here is so wonderful, we should record it for radio three's Sunday morning birdsong and music slot. The house always feels warm to come back to even when the heating isn't even on! The beds are so comfy though there is too much to do and see to spend a great deal of time in bed. We wish we could have stayed for longer...maybe next year.

Maggie Saxon (August 2022)

We had a fantastic holiday at Balranald Bay View cottage. It's a fabulous place to stay. The cottage is so spacious and comfortable, well-equipped and we were made very welcome by our host. Thank you for the welcome pack including the beautiful smoked salmon and wine - all very tasty stuff which we enjoyed tremendously. Thanks Julie!

The crowning glory though is the location - the stunning beach right outside the door. You are treated every day to the spectacle of the ebb and flow of the tide right from the kitchen window...if you didn't move from there you would have something to watch all day - it's a feast for the eyes watching the sea, the changing skies and of course the wildlife. It's equally good sitting in the kitchen watching the sea birds in the bay as it is relaxing on the comfy sofas whilst the oystercatchers peck about on the lawn. Very entertaining. This is what you want to escape to! Gorgeous.

We did actually leave the cottage and explore North Uist which we loved. There is plenty to see and do. We enjoyed going to the amazing beaches - glorious and all different, walking, visiting the Island show, and we were lucky enough to see eagles AND the elusive corncrake. It's been fantastic - the abundance and variety of flowers on the Machair was stunning. You have plenty of subject material for your wonderful photographs. We loved your placemats too!
Marvellous holiday. We will return!

Joy Sheriff (July 2022)

"The cottage is lovely and has everything you need and more. So clean, tidy and welcoming with comfortable surroundings second to none. The bay is beautiful as are the sunsets and variety of sea birds that can be seen from the garden. The welcome hamper was much appreciated and the wine was lovely and very drinkable. We had a life first when we saw and photographed a red necked phalarope which was amazing. Many thanks for your hospitality."

Glen and Kim Ellis (July 2022)

"We much enjoyed our stay in your lovely, very comfortable cottage. One of the benefits of staying in a house that the owners use themselves is that they are better furnished and equipped than pure holiday homes and we found everything we needed. We have stayed on North Uist many times before and this is certainly one of the best properties we have stayed in. The location of the cottage is superb and the highlight was watching the beautiful sunset on our last evening with St. Kilda clearly visible when we saw an otter trotting across the sand just below the garden."

P.B. and L.B. (June 2022)

We could not have asked for more comfortable accommodation and the view was ever-changing. The (complimentary) house phone was invaluable due to sudden illness in the family and it would have been much more difficult to contact them without it. Thanks also for the detailed notes and for the groceries (in the welcome pack) which were much appreciated. We enjoyed looking at your wildlife photographs.”

D.C. (June 2022)

"We have been coming to Uist for over 15 years and Balranald Bay View was the nicest place in which we have stayed. Thank you again for an amazing and memorable holiday which we both thoroughly enjoyed. We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would like return." (Booked again for 2023)

Lorraine and Martin Kiddle (May 2022)

"Thank you for letting us enjoy a very comfortable stay in your lovely cottage which is in a wonderful position. We really enjoyed the views across the bay and we miss the views from the windows each morning. The beaches are stunning and we saw some wonderful wildlife. The walk from the cottage around the bay and over the headland is amazing. The whole area is alive with birds, it is so peaceful just to sit and watch. The view from St. Kilda viewpoint on a clear day is breathtaking. We saw both golden and white tailed eagles is whilst out walking and even managed to see a corncrake, how lucky was that! We also enjoyed meals at the Westford Inn, the Lochmaddy hotel and a couple of cafés."

Linda and Bob (May 2022)

"Balranald Bay View is a really splendid house and we had a fantastic time here again. The silence and utter calm here is intoxicating. We explored the local Neo-lithic sites, which was time very well spent. Saw several golden eagles, a sea eagle and some beautiful harriers rounded off with a swim in the sea beside the cottage. We are really hooked on staying here. As soon as we are home we just want to be back in your cottage. (Booked again for 2022)

Sue and Bruce Sellers (October 2021)

"As usual the cottage was very clean and welcoming when we arrived and the food and wine in the welcome pack was very much appreciated. I loved the bed and found the mattress really comfortable. I know it's a Seally posturepaedic but wondered if you had any more details so I can get one for home."

"We saw otters and a hen harrier from the kitchen window."

"We really do love our holidays at your house in Hougharry and we were sad to leave. (Booked again for 2022 and 2023)

K.C. (September 2021)

"Balranald Bay View Cottage is a very special place and we found it difficult to tear ourselves away from it. We spent hours looking out of the kitchen window or staying in the garden listening to the wildlife and wading birds including curlews and herons. (Booked again for 2022)

G.G. (September 2021)

"Had a wonderful time staying at Balranald Bay View Cottage which is lovely and felt very warm and friendly. Our favourite place for dinner was the kitchen and we never tired of watching the sunsets (into the sea). We loved watching and listening to the many birds and it was great that the cottage was within the RSPB reserve where there were nesting terns. Although we had several trips out during our stay, including Berneray, South Uist and a boat trip our favourite place was right on the doorstep. We were sad to leave." (Booked again 2022)

Maggie Saxon and Lee Corner (August 2021)

"The cottage had everything we could possibly need. Everything was perfect and we didn't want to leave. There are brilliant views from every room. Loved the peace, tranquility, sunsets, and stars at night. Holiday of a lifetime!

Gary, Suzanne and Evelyn Upham-Jones (August 2021)

"Wonderful week in your lovely house and really loved being right beside the beach with such wonderful views. The house was perfect."

"We swam every day from the rocks on the beach below the garden and enjoyed walking from the house very much. Saw golden eagle, peregrine, otter, seal and great yellow bumblebee. Loved the sunset with St. Kilda. Thank you very much for making it happen. (Booked again for 2022)

E.P. (July 2021)

"Lovely holiday. The house is big and always spotlessly clean. The new cooker etc very much appreciated."

"Lovely to be back with the sound of the corncrake and managed to see one and get a photo. A family of linnets in the garden visited every day which was a real treat. Hope to return in the future."

Mark and Jenny McSparron (July 2021)

We are now on the ferry home after our fifth year of visiting this beautiful cottage. Each year the improvements to the house have been lovely and we’ve treasured our time there. The house is immaculate and the beds are so comfy! The location is simply outstanding! Right on the edge of a beautiful white sandy beach. We were very lucky with the weather and managed lots of walking and swimming. The sunsets are breathtaking. Staying at this place is good for the soul! Can’t wait for our next visit!

E.F. (June 2021)

"Here we are again and it feels like coming home. Have taken up wild water swimming so this bay beside the cottage is exquisite. The walks on the nature reserve are glorious. Blown away with scenery and walks. (Booked again for 2022 and 2023)

J.B. (June 2021)

"Another visit to this lovely home. The owners are continually updating and renewing their property, and this year we were treated to a brand new dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer. The accommodation is always immaculately clean which in these Covid times seems to take on new significance. With six of us, including two lively twin girls, there was still room to spare, and everything one could need is all there in the property. The location is stunning; right by the beach from where we all swam in the bay (the girls loved it), where walks can be done direct from the door, and where bird life is abundant. The house is warm and cosy, the beds comfortable, and with all the rooms being ensuite the accommodation is really convenient. Finally, the owners could not be more hospitable and helpful and we have felt on each of our visits that we are in very safe and competent hands. See you next year! Lynne and John

"I love being here." (Booked again for 2022)

Lynne and John Cox (May 2021)

"Just wanted to say that we had a really wonderful time in your cottage. We even swam off the rocks by the house at high tide with no wind and a calm flat sea without wetsuits. The calm stillness with just the movement of the water as I swim is a very wonderful memory and I didn't want to get out. The clear skies at night were amazing for stargazing. We can't wait to come again and already look forward to next year." (Booked again for 2021)

Sue and Bruce Sellers (October 2020)

"Impressed with your covid measures. Leaving 72 hours between guests is very reassuring as an arriving guest."

"Everything was great in the house. It's clear you have put a great deal of thought and effort into making the cottage and our stay as comfortable and safe as possible. The new appliances (fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine) were very nice and easy to use.

K.C. (September 2020)

"The birds were indescribable. White Tailed Sea Eagle, seals and others. I will remember this visit all my life"

P.F. (November 2019)

"The location of your cottage is spectacular. Had lovely weather and saw incredible sunsets. The light and colours were wonderful too.. Had a really wonderful time. Went swimming beside the cottage at sunset and high tide. No wetsuits. Flat calm sea."

Sue and Bruce Sellers (October 2019)

"Had a lovely holiday. The cottage is very comfortable and cosy."

F.C. (October 2019)

"Balranald Bay View felt homely and warm. In an ideal location, with swimming from the beach it had everything. There was so much to see from the kitchen window we didn't do much cooking. Dark skies, Milky Way, Golden Eagles and coastal walks from the door, thank you. One of the best moments of my life was getting into the sea beside the cottage. It was like a warm bath (October) andd I shall never forget it." (From email feedback)

The house was warm and homely, with plenty of space and very clean. It had everything you needed for a most comfortable stay. We found it difficult to concentrate on anything in the kitchen as we were constantly being distracted by the wildlife outside the window. We had good weather, swam from the beautiful beach, saw the milky way, and did many walks. Seals, ever-nosey, and golden eagles, peace and quiet, it was all so enjoyable and we were sad to leave. Lynne and John (From google review)

Lynne and John Cox (October 2019)

The location of the house, the kitchen and the views are unbeatable. It offers freedom to explore from the doorstep everyday and we can't wait to return again next year. (Booked again for 2020)

“We had a lovely time and your cottage is in a fantastic location. I particularly enjoyed watching the wading birds on the shoreline and changing tides from the kitchen window. The bay is perfect for snorkelling and feels quite safe and sheltered. I also painted for the first time in 35 years because I wanted to capture the beautiful sunset one evening. Hope to be back next year.”

"Your house and the location are wonderful. We all felt very comfortable and “at home”. The setting is so very special and those views, wow!!

My husband is already talking about moving to the Island. We witnessed the most amazing sunsets. You must feel incredibly lucky to live where you do.

Your house was perfect and very comfortable and had everything we could have asked for and needed. You have certainly made sure all of your guests have the most comfortable and best time possible. It's a 10 out of 10 from us"

Keith and Ruth (September 2018)

"We had a brilliant time and thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your lovely, very comfortable and well equipped cottage, in such a stunning location and a perfect spot to explore the Island. We saw a Sea Eagle with a fish in it's beak fly over your cottage on our first morning - wonderful! I'm just thinking about that fabulous view from the sitting room and kitchen windows and the spectacular sunsets whilst I am typing this. We certainly have many very happy memories to take away with us."

C. and S.B. (September 2018)

"We loved your home (and all your wonderful photos) - it provided us with everything we needed for a relaxing and very comfortable stay. The eggs, wine, oatcakes, and rhubarb and ginger preserve which were waiting for us were very much appreciated and I think we cleared the Hebridean Kitchen’s stock of oatcakes single handed!

We had an absolutely wonderful time. Thank you so much! All the things we enjoyed the most were right on our doorstep – we loved watching the water come and go from the bay, and all the waders foraging, and we all enjoyed the vast walks available at low tide – the dogs had the most wondrous freedom.”

C.P. (August 2018)

"Your home was perfect. Thank you so much for renting it to us. We were treated with views of Otters from the kitchen on the first evening, a fine beginning to a wonderful week. We were so impressed with North Uist. Had some great fishing, great walks with the dogs, great wildlife spotting and great weather. We would love to return." - booked again for 2019

Mark and Jenny McSparron (July 2018)

"The cottage location is absolutely unbelievable. The kitchen was extremely well equipped - possibly the best we have come accross in a good few years of holidaying in Scotland. Nice to be able to cook with gas which is unusual. The landline telephone was extremely useful as my Dad was in hospital and I was able to contact my Mum easily. The enclosed garden was great for the dog and plenty of parking for the two cars. Thank you for letting us stay in your home. We are all really envious."

The Famous Five, Nottingham (June 2018)

"We had a really good time again and a very relaxing week. A very high standard of accommodation. It's very hard to drag yourself away from the windows in case you miss something.

We had a Corncrake at the front door one day and an Otter appeared on the small island seen through the kitchen window. It took over an hour to eat the gannet it had caught. Exciting to see!

Thanks again for letting us stay. We will return." - booked again for 2019

Steve Crow (May 2018)

"A very welcoming, comfortable "home from home". Everything you could possibly need is provided, with many little extras. The view is stunning and the beach is really beautiful and accessible. Such peace. Our dog, Alfie, loved it."

Barbara and Keith Salmon (May 2018)

"We really enjoyed our stay at your beautiful cottage, which really helped to make our anniversary special with lots of wonderful memories. The beds were comfortable and we enjoyed the space and quiet. Even the dogs had smiles on their faces all the time. One of our favourite places was actually sitting on the back step, which was a wonderful spot to watch the sunsets with a glass of something nice and we saw Otters from here on the first night. We also went swimming in the sea and being able to access the beach through the back garden gate was a real bonus. We enjoyed lovely walks from the house too, along the beautiful white sandy beach to the bird reserve and along the headland to the blowhole. We also found the secret beach ---beautiful. We were lucky with the weather which was perfect. The ever changing views were to die for and we would have enjoyed them whatever the weather".

Adele Pescod (May 2018)

"The whole experience has made this feel a really friendly and personal experience. The information and email contact was first class, certainly the best I have ever experienced and I have done a few self catering holidays.

Great cottage which was clean, comfortable and well equipped for all our holiday needs. The location is stunning  as a birdwatcher I loved the mornings where I could spot many species without moving or even raising my binoculars!

The bed was extremely comfortable and we would certainly come back without hesitation. I am having serious withdrawal symptoms and missing the views. Once again many thanks, you helped make this a memorable holiday."

J. W. (August 2017)

These islands have such wonderful scenery, they are quite magical. We love to keep coming back.

We can't speak too highly of your house. It was spotlessly clean, lots of attention to detail, beautiful bed linen, nice thick towels and soap. The welcome pack was superb and very tasty. The house was very spacious and the views to die for. We had some hilarious games of monopoly and snakes and ladders, something we don't have time to do at home. Good family fun. Thank you again for allowing us to use your home."

Helen Page (July 2017)

"It's lovely to come back and everything is as we remembered - if not better than we remembered. We've been surprised at how at home we have felt and this is largely due to you making us feel so welcome and the house being so well equipped. The kitchen is great to work in. Enjoyed every minute." "We're back home after an absolutely magical holiday in your beautiful house. You are really blessed to own such a lovely home in such an awe inspiring location. We had no problems finding the house or using any of the equipment as all instructions were easy to find. Everything was comfortable and very clean. The corncrake was very vociferous. Many thanks again for such a wonderful holiday and memories including your excellent, friendly communications throughout the whole process."

Colin and Sylvia Jordan (June 2017)

"Thanks for so kindly making available your super home to us, we had a truly wonderful week. Your welcome goodies were very much appreciated and a lovely surprise, thank you so much.

We found the house to be exceptionally comfortable, well equipped and homely. Although this wasn't our first visit to North Uist, it was wonderful being in Balranald Bay View and we didn't venture very far from the Bay area.

Four Short-eared owls spotted in one day and a Hen harrier. Gorgeous sunsets. Infinite skies. Fabulous colours in the bay. Amazing perfume from the machair...........windy nights and soft days and not a midge in sight.

Thank you so much for sharing such a fabulous place with us and for making possible such a wonderful holiday. It will always hold a very special place in our memories and we will soon be hankering to return."

L.Bell (June 2017)

"Your cottage was lovely and yes, those views...... what's more you are both such excellent hosts even though we have never met you! Your kindness and care went a long way to making this an excellent holiday. The location and the house are stunning"

"Absolutely loved the cottage. A wonderfully comfortable home in a simply stunning location. Didn't want to leave! Highly recommended!"

Philip Thomas (April 2017)

"I had the most precious and impossibly beautiful time - thank you. I saw 68 birds (Feb 18 - 26th 2017), including many rarities confirmed by the RSPB assessor, due to the gales and early spring. Also 3 otters and a grey seal.

Visiting in mid - late February 2017 was priceless - best birding site I have ever attended.

The whole sky was ablaze with stars - even Antarctica wasn't as beautiful."

Dr P Fitzpatrick (February 2017)

" A gorgeous house that feels like home.

A beautiful secluded place to be..... thriving in nature and wildlife. Don't miss the sunset on clear evenings!"

James Rogerson (October 2016)

"Your location here is amazing. A warm and welcoming house. We are all enjoying it, especially the dogs who seem to think they have arrived in heaven. You have picked one of the best locations on the islands.

We have enjoyed the views and the peace. A welcome break from the business of life"

Billy and Anne Harley (October 2016)

"Everything at the cottage is great. The quality of the bedding and towels, etc is excellent and the views spectacular. The welcome pack was excellent and much appreciated.

The cottage is one of the cleanest we have visited and had every utensil you could need, in fact there were a couple of things which I now need to add to my kitchen. Living room was fantastic with fab TV. Nothing can compare to the views from the living room and the kitchen.

We do not usually book the same place twice but we will definitely return next year (booked to return in October 2017). The cottage was amazing, relaxing and rejuvenating. Great week, excellent accommodation and fantastic location."

AG (October 2016)

On arrival

" The cottage is wonderful. We already feel so much at home. We even baked a cake tonight - the first time ever that I have found a kitchen well equipped enough for that."

Post holiday feedback

"Cottage was soooo.. cosy and just perfect. Beds were really good, I slept deeply and I miss that now (that I have returned home). I hope you appreciate what a wonderful place you've got there."

We had some great days of cycling and walking, but most of the time we spent walking on the beach and swimming. Nina our dog also had a fabulous time and is very disappointed to be home."

NM(August 2016)

"On our tour of the islands we stayed in cottages on Mull, Skye and North Uist. They were all good but we all agreed that the best was Balranald Bay View! House is lovely and view outstanding even in the rain!

The location is just brilliant, the cottage itself was lovely, plenty of room, beautiful views and just so pleasant and relaxing. We will definitely come back. Brilliant."

Prof LH (August 2016)

"Lovely place to holiday and spotlessly clean. Otters in the bay too."

Nigel Davies (July 2016)

"I can understand why the previous guest didn't want to leave - your house is in a beautiful setting!

What a delight to work in a kitchen that was so well appointed, my husband is a keen cook and it's not often there's every pot/utensil/dish that he needs. View from the lounge is stunning.

Amazing quality of TV - the 3D effect was great for watching films and the boys brought a gaming device which was great when connected to the TV."

LB (July 2016)

"Lovely cottage in a wonderful location. We have had a fantastic week and spent lots of time on the beach, swimming  in the sea and trying the local seafood. Is there any chance of staying longer just on the remote possibility that there has been a cancellation?"

"We had a great time and the house was great and can't think of anything that could be improved on.

Welcome pack much appreciated. Saw lots of birds from the house and in the reserve and attach a list."

"Really enjoyed our stay in your home, it is in a lovely location with stunning views. The sunsets were out of this world.

Bed very comfortable. Kitchen extremely well equipped. I loved the sound system. Photos on the wall gave the house a nice feel.

Saw the otter and 2 cubs a few times. Watching the wading birds on the beach from the garden filled up many hours."

" Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in your lovely house. The situation is amazing! We loved it and will definitely return.

We saw some spectacular sunsets and managed a few wonderful walks. It was also great to spot an eagle"
