The incredible night skies!

The Night Skies of North Uist

Due to its beach side location in a official "dark sky area", our cottage is ideally situated to get great views of the stars and Milky Way over the sea. Between September and March on clear nights and with the right conditions, the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights) can also be seen reflected in the sea. A truly amazing sight!

We are delighted to be able to share this short time-lapse film of the night sky as seen from our cottage garden and adjacent coast, made during our visits in December 2015 and September 2016.

Information about the time-lapse video of the night sky above

The first sequence consists of 120 images of the moon setting over the bay at about 9.30 pm. The moon phase, time and the tide times have to be favourable to see this, but it is definitely worth planning and waiting for.

The second sequence was taken on the same evening and has 139 images of the Milky Way over the sea. There were also a lot of shooting stars visible during that evening.

The final sequence has 227 images of the night sky with the sensational Aurora Borealis (Northern lights) also clearly visible on the horizon.

Our next project is to capture the Aurora Borealis on film - watch this space!
