What could be better than beautiful sunny days spent walking and exploring the stunning coastline in the Outer Hebrides? The coastline of North Uist and Berneray has arguably some of the best beaches in the UK. Perhaps not as famous as the beach at Luskentyre on the Isle of Harris but that means you are more likely to have the beaches and walks along the Machair to yourself!
The flora, fauna and wildlife of the Machair
As spring moves into summer the flowers form a carpet across the dunes. The habitat is rare and supports many birds such as Pipits, Larks and the declining Corn Bunting. Corncrakes migrate here especially to breed in the insect rich Machair. They can be heard calling at dusk and dawn. The Great Yellow Bumblebee, which is almost extinct in the UK also breeds here.
A succession of Orchid species pop up through Spring and Summer and stand proud above the shorter flowers displaying their bright pink and purple flowers.
The scent of the Machair is amazing and drifts across the bay into our open windows during the early evening. Isn't nature wonderful?
We hope you enjoy the short video we have put together to share this beauty with you.
